Volunteering |
"The world is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers" (Terry Guillemets)The Norfolk Historical Society needs volunteers to assist in the operation of the Eva Brook Donly Museum and Archives. As a volunteer you will be helping us grow while having the opportunity to enlarge your circle of friends and begin a new adventure into the rich and expansive history of Norfolk County. And there is tremendous flexibility with any of our volunteer roles. You can work for an hour, a half-day or a full day. You can come in weekly, monthly or even seasonally. We even have some jobs that you could do at home, if that interests you. The choice is yours. If you are currently in high school, the Eva Brook Donly Museum and Archives is a great place to complete your community service requirements
Consider a Volunteer Opportunity to Match Your InterestsReception and Gift Shop: Volunteers greet and assist those who come to visit as well as handle the sales of books and items from the Gift Shoppe. They also may assist with office work such as making copies, stuffing envelopes, etc. Museum: There are several opportunities where volunteers can become involved such as: Display Installation - Supporting the ongoing set-up and alteration of the excellent displays of artifacts and historical data in the museum. We have a vast collection of artifacts and memorabilia from old Norfolk that evoke wonderful memories for all of our visitors. Museum Docent - Receive training that will allow you to act as a Guide for tour groups of adults or school children visiting the Museum. An excellent opportunity to learn about the extensive history of Norfolk County and its people, and then be able to pass it on to another generation. Carpentry - Anyone with carpentry skills is especially welcome - whether it be to help with small projects and odd jobs around the Museum or Artifact Restoration which requires a skilled craftsman with tools to restore historical artifacts, furniture, etc. Cataloguing - Helping to document and key information on historical artifacts into the Museum record system. Education/Activity Programmer - Assisting with class visits and school holiday programming. Archives: Volunteers staff the William Yeager Research Room and participate in a variety of library type functions:
Cataloguing - Assisting with the cataloguing of books or indexing of documents and information that people have donated. Research Assistance - After completing a training program, you could provide assistance to our many visitors who come to research their Norfolk ancestors. Special Projects - There are always challenging and exciting projects underway requiring identification, retrieval and recording of documentation on specific topics of interest relative to Norfolk County and its inhabitants. Technical Support: We have a growing computer system that requires ongoing maintenance and enhancements. Some related activities that Volunteers may support are: Local Network - PC-literate individuals are always needed to help us keep our computer systems in working order. Internet - We currently have an excellent, and always improving, website which requires regular refreshing and enhancing. Opportunities include developing content for the site as well as technical assistance. At the moment, we especially need an Assistant Webmaster - someone who would like to learn and help support the internal workings of our website. General: There are also some periodic events for which volunteers are critical to ensuring a favourable outcome: Special Events - Throughout the year there are special, one-day, events that require a group of volunteers for a short period of time. This would include annual events such as the Garden Tour, Yard Sale, Spring Tea, Lecture Series and Norfolklore Show. Gardening - As we are currently refreshing the entire yard and garden area around our beautiful building, there is always an opportunity for individuals who would like to develop or exercise their gardening skills during the warmer months.
