The Fulcrum of the Arts: Canadian and Alma College 

Find out more about Eva Brook Donly's school days by joining guest curator Dr. Susan Butlin as she traces the story of how Alma College, a private girl's school in St.Thomas, developed as a centre for early art training and contributed to cultural life in southwestern Ontario and Canada. The careers of art teachers and graduates will be highlighted including Simcoe's own Eva Brook Donly who graduated from Alma College in 1886 and taught there until 1889.

Alma College in St.Thomas, ON, played an important role in educating women artists and supporting the art and culture in the region between 181 and 1939. Simcoe's own Eva Brook Donly attended Alma College as an art student and taught there after graduating in 1886. This special exhibit comes from the collection of the Elgin County Museum and Archives and is supplemented by our own pieces which will highlight Eva Brook Donly's work. The exhibit will unite paintings by students and instructors, archival photographs, and memorabilia.

Simcoe's own Eva Brook Donly attended Alma College as an art student and taught there after graduating in 1886. This special exhibit comes from the collection of the Elgin County Museum and Archives and is supplemented by our own pieces which will highlight Eva Brook Donly's work. Did You Know that in the early 1800s one quarter of Norfolk's population was black? Hear more about Norfolk's black history by joining Scott Gillies for this interesting lecture. The talk will cover the beginning of slavery in Canada, the import of slaves accompanying the Loyalists to the area, the Underground Railroad, abolition, and the Black community until the 1880s.

Chiefswood and E. Pauline Johnson: Where Culture Meets

This presentation guides us through the history of the Six Nations of the Grand River territory with a focus on the role Chiefswood played as a meeting place between British Canadians and the Six Nations. It will also examine the career of E. Pauline Johnson, the most famours individual associated with Chiefswood National Historic Site. Pauline Johnson possessed a unique bi-cultural heritage, both Mohawk and British, which she integrated fascinatingly into her poetry and performance.

 May Lecture - Norfolk Folk

Norfolk County is inhabited by people from many different ethnic backgrounds. Local author and historian Cheryl MacDonald will discuss the immigration of various populations to Norfolk County and how their presence enhances the cultural fabric of the area.
