If you are looking for an old bargain, get ready for the Norfolk Historical Society's first-ever auction of extra goods.

"I don't want people thinking we are giving away Norfolk's history, said Karen Culver, president of the local historic group. "But we have some duplicate items, some items unrelated to Norfolk's history, and some things that we don't know where they came from."

This is the first-ever live auction for the Norfolk Historical Society as it goes through its properties in coming up with items for the sale. Some society members have also donated items for the sale.

The Antiques and Nostalgia Auction will be held at the Curling Club  (Norfolk Fairgrounds property) on Sept. 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Items include furniture, antiques, art, and other collectibles.

"We need more room at the museum and son of the items would never be put on display," Culver said.

Proceeds from the auction will be used for projects by the society and the Eva Brook Donly Museum.

Many items are beautiful but take up a lot of space at the museum. Some piece don't lend themselves to display purposes either.

"I'm a pack rat," said Bill Yeager, curator at the museum. "It was hard to let some things go, but I had to look at it in different ways and decide whether it was something we needed or something we could live without."

Yeager is pleased space will be freed up through the sale and thinks there will be some wonderful items for people.

"Bill was very precise in deciding what could go and what could stay," Culver said. "He put a lot of work and time into the decision-making."

In all, there are about 220 pieces for sale, including some out of date local books. There are a variety of antique chairs, desks, a mantle clock, vintage typewriters, folk art, metal signs, primitives, a wooden washing machine, glass, candle moulds and milk bottles.

"There are a lot of things you aren't going to see everyday," Yeager laughed.

Culver said the auction should appeal to many people.

"I think a lot of people who like auctions will be interested in what we will have available," Culver said.

Previews at the curling club will be held Sep. 11 (4-8 p.m.) and Sept. 12 (2-6:30 p.m.)
